JUDGE'S CRITIQUES

Alaskan Malamutes – Crufts 10/03/13 – Judged by Sue Ellis

My sincere thanks for a fabulous entry and for accepting my decisions so sportingly, contributing to a really good ringside atmosphere. Presentation of the exhibits on the whole was excellent and overall, temperaments were commendable. Some of the exhibits looked good on stand but failed on the move. Type was varied in a few classes. My main concern was still the amount of level bites I came across but generally feet and tails seemed to have improved. I considered my principle winners fulfilled my interpretation of the Breed Standard and was delighted to find out later that my BOB, who shortlisted in the Group was indeed an all round malamute, being a team lead dog as well.

Veteran Dog:
1. Coman’s Arctictrek Georgia’s Dream At Wintalakes ShCm. 10 year old grey/white. Well balanced lad with very good bone. Super feet. Lovely tail set and really attractive head. Moved freely and covered the ground well.
2. Chambers’ Arctictrek Gold Glistens ShCm. 11 year old red/white. Again well balanced with much the same attributes as above but was slightly shorter in loin and didn’t quite match 1 on the go around for reach and drive. I was interested to find out afterwards that they are half brothers.

Special Puppy Dog:
1. BP. Syson’s Icewolf Eyes On the Prize. 10 mth g/w who really came into his own on the go around. Very pleasing on the eye and held his topline well. Super coat and gorgeous tail. Medium boned with good feet. Good proportions overall. Nicely handled.
2. Phillips & Skopina-Panyuorka’s Alveig Ultra Critical Decision Point. 9 mth b/w with tremendous bone. The most lovely head and coat. Tail ok. Handled to perfection. More compact then 1 and this showed on the go around but still a quality puppy.
3. Brouard’s Dreamwolves Cauz For Aplauz. 13 mth g/w. Really liked this boy. Well balanced with good bone. Most attractive head with a well set tail. Harsh coat and fabulous feet. Moved freely around the ring with purpose but didn’t have the polish of 1 and 2.

Special Junior Dog:
1.Walker’s Lueldar Bad To the Bone. 14 mth g/w. Slightly out of coat but in good body and well off for bone. Nicely balanced and moved in tune with his handler around the ring. Really appealing head and good tail.
2. Wilkinson & Jelf’s Lapema Angel De Cambios. 15 mth g/w in full coat and good bone. Thought he was going to be my winner but didn’t quite give it his all. Such a lovely head and super tail. Really nice feet and made a great shape on the stand. When he got into his stride his movement was free and easy and he looked great in side profile.
3. Hughes’ Icetrax Superslider. 14 mth g/w, medium bone with harsh coat. Would prefer looser tail. Makes a nice shape on the stand but needs to settle more on the move as it made him rather uncoordinated.

Yearling Dog:
1. Cochran’s Blaiddeira It’s All About You at Malamaison. 21 mth g/w who stood out for his ring schooling. Moved well around the ring and kept his topline. Lovely head with required harsh coat. Good bone. Tail well set. Very good feet.
2. Vasarhelyi’s O’Kinastar Captin Fantastic. 16 mth male, slightly longer cast than 1 but covered the ground easily. Well off for bone with a fabulous head. Great tail and super feet. Needs more attention to detail when showing but he really appealed to me.
3. Dolan’s Ishjamani Hey Joe. 22 mth g/w. Loved the shape this boy made and had a great side gait. Great head and bone. Tail ok. Good sized feet. Just needed to be more co-operative with his handler.

Post Graduate Dog:
1.Page’s Waytogo Austin Sausimayok for Cedarcreek. 18 mth g/w. Caught my eye the minute I began to assess the class. Beautiful shape with good anglulation. Wonderful head and lovely tail. Nice big feet. He didn’t disappoint on the move either, so very easy and fluid.
2. John’s Cristakell Aeolian Night. 2.5 yrs g/w. Well put together with ample bone and substance. Easy, comfortable mover who displayed super side gait. Appealing head and required snowshoe feet.
3. 2yr g/w. Mort’s Arcticbreeze Fast N Furious. Not the biggest of dogs and probably at the bottom of the standard but what a little powerhouse. Motored around the ring. Really liked everything about him, head, coat, tail, feet. Would just prefer a bit more of everything.

Limit Dog:
A very nice class to assess and I was splitting hairs with placings.
1. Mort’s Arcticbreeze Midnite Hero. Displayed a lovely easy gait throughout. Well off for substance and bone. Good Tail. He really does have a soft expression which is so appealing. He looked at home in the Challenge line up and was discreetly handled.
2. Wolfe’s Hawkeye Polarni Usvit Within Dreamwolves (Imp Cze). Although not in full coat, you couldn’t deny the shape or muscled quarters of this lad. Really nicely put together, with moderate substance, well arched feet, super tail and a gorgeous head. He moved quite beautifully around the ring.
3. Thompson’s Shomont Rasin Cain. Good looking boy, well muscled and strong rear. Super head. Fabulous lush coat and a lovely waving plume. Well off for bone and moved with purpose around the ring. Would have just wanted a tad more length in leg.

Open Dog:
The depth of quality in this class was thrilling.
1. DCC & BOB. Chrillesen & Rost’s Dk Ch Inupiat’s Quuniqsuq Jason. So much to like about him and all male. In glorious coat with tremendous bone, he moved steadily and powerfully with a nice easy rhythmic gait around the ring. Gorgeous head with kind expression. Super feet and well furred tail. Handled stylishly, getting the best from him. In excellent condition and definitely Fit For Function coupled with a seemingly tireless movement, earned him the Top Honours today.
2. RDCC. Sorensen & Jensen’s Int/DK Ch Alaskan Icy Cougar. Another beautiful example of our breed albeit different in type to 1. A stand out dog with a wonderful head with the smallest of ears and an incredibly lush full coat. Great feet which propelled him around the ring with an easy side gait with his well furred tail waving constantly. Moved as one with his handler.
3. Bebiano’s Multi Ch Woodvram Polarni Usvit JW ShCm (Imp Cze) In great condition and moved out so well with his handler around the ring. Lovely head with tiny ears and had a superb coat. Beautifully presented as always.

Good Citizen Dog:
1. Hardwick’s Cheeko Tip Of The Iceberg. This boy finally got his act together and moved far better than in PGD. Medium boned and compact. Pleasing head and good tail.
2. Bevan’s Snobruk Super Charged with Conyzone. Slightly longer cast. In really good coat and moved well around ring. Strong head. Good tail.
3. Chambers’ Arctcictrek Gold Glistens. (2nd in VD).

Veteran Bitch:
1. Mort’s Articbreeze Lady Imocara. 7 year old g/w whose sound steady movement belied her age. Such a pretty girl in great coat with a super tail. Firm body.
2. Butler’s Kaytoo Kandi Kandu. 8 years old g/w and another who moved out well in all directions. Pretty girl and similar in type to 1.
3. Roach & Pyper’s Dankatcha’s Shilling at Celticice. 9 year old g/w, slightly larger girl but still very smart with a great side profile and conducted herself admirably.

Special Puppy Bitch:
1. Wilkinson & Jelf’s Justami Meoquanee Per Lapema. 10mths r/w. Smart young lady who moved soundly around the ring. Has the sweetest of expressions. Great feet and super tail. Attentive to her handler.
2. Clarke’s Indian Dreamcatcher Illa Kuvianartok at Whiteout. 11 mths r/w. Very composed and calm on the move, she exhibited a lovely side profile with a good tail. Strong in head and shown in great coat.
3. Wendel’s Malamaison Hot Gossip. 10 mths g/w. Rather out of coat but such a pretty girl. In side profile she looked wonderful with a lovely tail but her down and back could have been tidier. Still a lot to like about her.

Special Junior Bitch:
1. Clarke’s Indian Dreamcatcher Illa Kuviarnatok at Whiteout. (2nd Special Puppy)
2. Hardwick’s Blizzardpeak Moongazer. 15 mths g/w. Very pretty girl who once she settled showed herself off to advantage. Medium bone with good tidy feet but would prefer a looser tail.
3. Jackson’s Inupiat’s Ijiq Be-Bop-A-Lu-La (Imp Nor). 15 mths g/w coming back into coat. Super bone with a nice tail. Strong in head and would prefer smaller ears. Well muscled with a powerful rear .

Special Yearling Bitch:
This class were all at various stages of development.
1. Dunk’s Lapema Angelo Di Armonia. 16 mths g/w rather out of coat but did everything that was required of her to be the class winner. Medium boned with reasonable tail. Very pretty face but would like slightly smaller ears. Tidy mover.
2. Perks’ & Higgins’ Blaiddeira Through My Eyes. 20 mths g/w. Attractive head with the smallest of ears, lovely mover and in great coat. Would just prefer a bit more length of leg.
3. Louch & Forsey’s Magician Day Before You Came at Muzoku. 15 mths g/w. Thought this was my class winner at one point but she wasn’t consistent on the move. Pity as when she kept it all together, was really good with super tail set. Larger than 1 and 2, a good honest girl. Really nice bone, feet and strong head.

Post Graduate Bitch:
Some very exciting prospects in this class.
1. 20 mths g/w. Tabarrini’s Cosmicfire Disturbja. g/w. A very nice class winner. Her overall construction is sound and that is reflected in her movement. Admired her qualities. Handled sympathetically to achieve the very best for her. Be interested to see her in the future.
2. g/w. Drummond’s Monikoona Fame In Flash. Slightly longer cast than 1 and moved out well, just didn’t flow the same. Presents a really nice picture on the stand. Good bitch with much to like. Discreetly handled.
3. Blackburn’s Celticwolf Long Night. 3 yrs s/w Thought this girl was interesting. Nicely balanced and moved effortlessly displaying her super tail. Strong rear. Needed a bit more enthusiasm to shine.

Limit Bitch:
Varied class for type overall.
1. Mort’s Arcticbreeze Midnite Echo. Stand out class winner. Didn’t put a foot wrong and moved neatly and easily around the ring. Exudes breed type. Well muscled quarters. So liked her, but just didn’t sparkle in the Challenge .
2. Blaney’s Windberg Paparazzi To Fenrirkin. Smaller than 1 in profile and different in type but makes a good shape. Very well muscled and it was on the move that won the placing here.
3. Anderson’s Sledog Forest trail For Cherubini. Nicely boned girl with quite a strong head and slightly light in eye. Good proportions and fabulous tail. She used herself so well on the move.

Open Bitch:
This class made quite an impression on me.
1. BCC. Tozzi’s Int/Ro/Cy/Mr/Me/Az BIS BISS Multi Ch Icicle Creek’s Superstar at Magician. This girl has such freedom of movement and her handler uses this to full advantage when he moves her, making her hard to ignore and very eye catching. Short, dense, well presented coat. Has strong feet and very good tail. Neat, small ears, but would have liked more expression. Gave it her all in the Challenge.
2. RBCC. Nawrocka’s Pol Ch Ilia Lucky Appalachian (Imp Pol) Very similar in type to 1 and was shocked to see later that she was almost 6 yrs as she most certainly did not look her age. In really good condition with the prettiest of faces which was so endearing. Smart, sound action on the move and held her topline so well.
3. Wolfe’s Follow My Dreams Polarni Usvit Via Dreamwolves. Different in type to 1 and 2. Slightly out of coat but what a super girl with the most gorgeous head. In very hard condition all over and well bodied. Moved as one with her handler and covered the ground with ease.

Good Citizen Bitch:
1. Anderson’s Sledog Forest trail for Cherubini (3rd in LB)
2. Shorer-Wheeler’s Koromandel Somebody Told Me. Out of coat but made a great shape. Good feet and tail and moved with purpose around the ring.
