For 40 years, Alaskan Malamutes held rare breed status in the UK meaning there was no opportunity to create UK Malamute Champions. In January 2006 due to the gaining popularity of the breed, the Kennel Club changed the status of the breed and for the first time we were able to gain Challenge Certificates (CCs) and ultimately compete to become Champions.

In the Summer of 2006 the first UK Champion Alaskan Malamute was confirmed by the Kennel Club and there are now several UK Champions. The popularity of the breed has also resulted in an increase in group placing and Best in Show wins both at Championship and Open levels.

In the UK, to become a Champion your dog needs to win 3 CCs under 3 different judges. CCs are available at only certain Championship Shows, so this is not an easy task. To win a CC, your Malamute needs to be given a "Best Dog" or "Best Bitch" award by the judge after beating all of the other Malamutes of the same sex entered on the day.

The Malamute is currently in Stud Band C meaning that a 1st or 2nd in Open Class or a 1st in Limit Class will gain your dog a Kennel Club Stud Book number, giving that dog automatic qualification to Crufts for life. You can also gain a Stud Book number by gaining a Junior Warrant (JW). For details of the JW, please refer to the Kennel Club website The Kennel Club
